Science Courses Offered at HSLPS in 2016-2017

1. Living Environment

It is a two semester course with lab that fulfills the Regents requirements. It covers all the units of life sciences which are written in a New York City High School Science Regents Scope and Sequence. The course addresses Scientific methods and Laboratory skills, Cells and Biological Processes, Human Physiology, Genetics, Evolution, Ecology and its Impact on Environment.

All the students are required to take Regents at the end of this course. It is offered in 9th grade.

2. Earth Science

It is a two terms course with lab. It meets the requirements of Regents Earth Science written in NYCHSSRSS. The topic covers in this course are Maps and Measurements, Dynamic Earth, Rocks and Minerals, Landscapes, Earth History, Isolation, Meteorology, Climate, and Astronomy. All the students are required to take Regents at the end of this course. It is offered in 10th grade.

3. Chemistry

It is a two terms Regents course with lab. It covers all the units in NYCHSSRSS. The Atom, chemical formulas and equations , physical behavior of gases,, periodic table, bonding, properties of solutions, kinematic and equilibrium, acid , bases and salt, organic chemistry and Nuclear chemistry. This course terminates by taking the Regents Exam in June. It is offered to 11th and 12th graders.

4. Physics

It is a two terms Regents course with lab. This addresses the units of Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, waves and light and Modern Physics written in NYCHSSRSS. Students are required to pass Algebra regents before taking this course. This course terminates by taking Regents physics in June. It is offered to 11th and 12th graders.

5. Advance Placement Environmental Science

It is a yearlong college bearing credit course with lab. It covers the material required by College Board. The units listed in the course are Earth System and Resources, The living world, Population, Land and water, Energy resources and consumption, Pollution and Global change. This course terminates by taking College Board exam in May. It is offered to 11th and 12th grade students who are recommended by their teachers.
